Indoor Air Quality in Malibu.

Malibu air changes with the season. Much of the year it is cool, clean and humid from the ocean. In autumn, Santa Ana winds can push smoke down the canyons and out toward the coast, sometimes for days. We design indoor air quality systems that let homes enjoy fresh marine air when it is clear, manage coastal humidity and close off to outdoor air when smoke arrives.

Fresh Air That Knows When to Close

An energy recovery ventilator supplies filtered outdoor air and exhausts stale air, keeping bedrooms and living spaces fresh even when the home is closed up. In a coastal home, it also helps balance humidity between inside and out.

On poor outdoor air days, such as wildfire smoke, the fresh-air intake can be shut off or set to recirculate, and the system continues filtering the air inside. Automatic smoke response is something we design only for homes with compatible integrated controls, and we discuss it during the walkthrough.

Filtration, Carbon and UV

Fine filtration in the MERV 15 to 16 range captures the smallest particles in wildfire smoke, along with pollen and dust. An activated carbon stage reduces smoke odors and many gases, protecting fabrics, art and furnishings as well as the people in the home.

Ultraviolet light in each air handler keeps coils and drain pans clean, which matters in Malibu's damp coastal air. We size filter cabinets so airflow and quiet operation are preserved.

Humidity and Optional Monitoring

Coastal homes on Point Dume, in Malibu Colony and along Carbon Beach and Broad Beach can hold more moisture than is comfortable. Where needed, we add whole-home dehumidification so closets, wine storage and bedrooms stay dry and fresh.

If you want to see what's in your air, we can add indoor air quality monitoring that tracks fine particles, VOCs, and humidity, and ties into your filtration and fresh-air system. Every design is fitted to the home's existing equipment, and White Glove members have filters, UV lamps and dampers serviced on schedule.

Questions

Indoor Air Quality Questions in Malibu

How does the system respond when poor outdoor air, such as wildfire smoke, reaches the coast?

The fresh-air intake can be shut off or set to recirculate, and the system keeps recirculating and filtering indoor air through fine filtration and carbon until conditions improve. Automatic smoke response is something we design only for homes with compatible integrated controls, and we discuss it during the walkthrough.

Will fresh air make our coastal home more humid?

Not when the system is designed for it. An energy recovery ventilator helps moderate incoming moisture, and dehumidification can be added where the home needs it.

Can air quality protection be added to an existing home?

Usually, yes. We review the existing equipment, duct system and available space, then recommend filtration and fresh air that fit, with monitoring available as an option.

What is a safe haven room?

A space, often a primary suite, designed to stay especially clean during smoke events with dedicated filtration. Our Indoor Air Quality Safe Haven page explains the approach in detail.
